About Retinal Cameras

Retinal cameras, also known as fundus cameras, are specialized low-power microscopes with cameras attached and give eye care professionals advanced diagnostic abilities.  Retinal cameras are used to capture images of the back of the eye in order to detect disease or disease progression in the retina.  Retinal or fundus photography can be used to view the central and peripheral retina, optic disc, and macula.  Mydriatic fundus cameras require dilation while non-mydriatic fundus cameras do not.  Additionally, retinal photography can use various color filters and specialized dyes.  Diseases detected and tracked by retinal cameras include glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.
