About Corneal Topographers

Corneal topography, also known as videokeratography or photokeratoscopy is an integral part to eye care medicine.  It is a non-invasive imaging technique used by eyecare practitioners to map the surface curvature and shape of the cornea, the outer layer of the eye.  The three-dimensional map created by a corneal topographer is critical in determining quality of vision and corneal health.  Ophthalmologists and optometrists can use this data to plan cataract surgery, intraocular (IOL) lens implantation, refractive surgery, and evaluating the results of these surgeries.  Corneal topography can also be used in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of corneal disease, abrasions or deformities as well as assessing the fit of contact lenses.
