About Autorefractor

Autorefractors are computer-controlled devices that provide a baseline for a patient’s prescription for glasses or contact lenses prior to the phoropter exam. The traditional exam takes just a few seconds and does not require the patient to be dilated. Autorefractors measure refractive error by measuring how light is affected as it enters the eye.  Patients are shown an image that goes in and out of focus while the autorefractor measures reflections from a cone of infrared light. By doing this, the instrument can determine when the patient’s eye comes into proper focus. This is repeated multiple times, thus calculating refraction, sphere, cylinder, and axis. Automated refraction is particularly useful for non-communicative patients such as young children or those with disabilities as it does not require subjective verbal responses. Modern autorefractors can also include keratometry, topography, and tonometry functions.
