About Ophthalmic Lasers

As technology advances, lasers are being utilized more and more for ophthalmic surgeries and treatment. An ophthalmic laser can be used to treat vision-threatening diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, fix damaged corneas and retinal tears, or to correct a patient’s vision. There are three main types of lasers used in ophthalmology: photocoagulating, photodisrupting, and photoablating. The most common ophthalmic lasers are SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) and YAG. SLT lasers have a laser wavelength of 532 nanometers and are used to lower intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma patients. YAG lasers have a wavelength of 1064 nanometer and are used to eliminate cloudiness after cataract or lens replacement surgery. Ophthalmic laser systems can include one or combine multiple therapies into one unit and can come with or without an integrated slit lamp.
