About Applanation Tonometry

Tonometry is used to measure intraocular pressure (IOP), the fluid pressure inside the eye.  Optometrists and ophthalmologists use this test on patients who are at risk for glaucoma.  Applanation tonometers apply force to the eye in order to temporarily flatten part of the cornea.  Because of the direct contact with the eye, numbing drops are usually applied prior to testing.  An orange dye is also often used.  There are two types of applanation tonometers.  Goldman tonometers are attached to a slit lamp and have a prism on the head of the tonometer that presses against the cornea.  Perkins tonometers are portable, handheld units that may be more convenient for children and patients who need to be lying down.
